I cannot say enough about nurses. For the last month I have watched them work their asses off keeping our loved ones clean, warm, fed, medicated, counselled, comforted, lifted, ice watered, tested and kept alive and safe. They organize, handle family, fight for beds, cover for each other, find wheel chairs, clean potty chairs. And they never sit down, or if they do the bell starts to ring and someone needs something yet again. They are amazing.
Bill almost got a bed in hospice today. I did tell them at the hospital that we are happy where we are but I know they have a real bed crunch. We will fit in wherever it is best. I know it doesn't really make a huge difference to Bill…except he is truly bonding with the nurses that look after him.
The last dr.that saw Bill was sure a screw up. So far all the doctors he has seen have been hugely helpful. The last one just simply didn't 'get' it. He was the one that looked twelve. I noticed after we met with him that Bill's meds all changed. And he didn't do as well. Apparently he changed them all in preparation of going home. Seriously! And this was after I told him that Bill wasn't coming home according to all doctors preceding him. When I told him that it was determined that our house wasn't ready due to renos, he actually asked if we had other family or friends that could take him!!
Yeah, um excuse me sister, but could you let me put a hospital bed in your living room, fill your house with nursing staff and stay there til my husband dies? Well I pay about forty grand a year (and sometimes more) in taxes , so we are going to use the system, Bill stays there and gets the best care possible. Right now he can hardly get out of bed anymore. The head nurse today put him back on injections (thank God…he can't swallow) and they can use certain drugs if he is in there that wouldn't have been able to come home with him. He is just so hugely nauseated all the time. I would love to give him hemp oils.
Dorothy (little) came today!!! It was wonderful to sit and visit with her. Two Bootles in a row, Emmy yesterday and Do today! We went to visit Bill and took him out and about in the monstrosity they call a wheel chair, or rather a people mover. Awful things they are. Bill did well but asked to go back up pretty quickly.
Tonight Do, Monte and myself went to a pub for dinner. I had a kangaroo burger. Really! I was kind of disappointed though..it just tasted like mild beef…and I like my beef STRONG!! I like it really ripe, almost over the edge. This was more like veal…sissy meat! But it was a really good burger, I just couldn't eat very much of it. God now I am rambling. I really must try to post these posts earlier before I get so tired. My apologies!
I went back over to see Bill but he was soooo sleepy. He said "I'm sorry…I tried to wait" :( The last few nights he has been awake and I get him to sleep and head home around 11. Tomorrow I am going to go over at supper time and just stay there with him. He did ask me to find Homeland on the tv but they don't have it. So Monte is going to 'get' it onto Bill's own laptop so he can watch it.
Now to chair. My head is going up and down. I started typing this over an hour ago! I am tired I have to admit. I am going to go over to the hospital earlier and stay later tomorrow. I hope he phones me tonight. TTYL
Blech...that kangaroo burger sounds awful. I love GOOD ground sirloin. You have exactly the right attitude about the system..
