I don't know if anyone else watches Longmire but it is the most awesome cowboy sheriff native tv show. At the end of each episode something mind blowing and crazy happens so you HAVE to watch the next episode. And thats exactly what we did...for almost two whole days.
It was snowing outside, the three dogs and cat were all cozy and sleeping and we all snuggled down for a Longmire fest. Although Aryn, bless her did her peking duck and amazing pork belly. And she made little pancakes and steam buns and we had the most delicious dinner. The peking duck is very very involved. It involves hanging from the clothes drying thingy in the bathtub with a fan blowing on it...for six hours!!!!!! Then it is roasted properly in the oven. At the end you are supposed to have crispy delicious skin and shredded meat on wee pancakes with cucumber and green onion and hoisin. So delicious!!!! The first duck she made was crispy perfect, but this one for some unknown reason had flaccid skin. Still delicious though!!!!!
Now I am back in North Van at the hotel. The only room they had left was a smoking room. It smells like Mabel's pool hall in here. I called BCAA today and had them pop Monte's van open so I could get the keys. His van is now safely parked in front of my room. Later I went in to visit Monte. He is doing well. He seems content and happy, if a little bored. I will try to get some music to him tomorrow. That will help.
Tonight I had dinner with April at Denny's....my fave go to restaurant. I didn't finish my cobb salad and now I am hungry again. So annoying. They do have breakfast at this hotel. Its dry cereal, waffles (eggo) hard boiled eggs and toast. Not bad. Not good. But just right.
When I was at the hairdressers in Kamloops before coming down, the hairdresser sold me a bottle of purple shampoo. Its not strong...its the kind old ladies use to get rid of the yellow in their hair. She told me that if I leave it in for ten minutes it will leave a hint of purple in my hair. A hint. Should I trust that? Why yes I think I shall!!! TTYL
We travel. Between trips my life is up and then down and then up and then down. This is a blog about my trips and ups and downs. I don't expect anyone to read this but I will enjoy writing it!!

WE MET JAMES!!!
So, a lot has happened since the last post. I spent the last few days before Vancouver trip getting things organized, getting my hair permed, last minute shopping items, packing etc...
The trip down was awesome...and awesomely scary. I decided, on the advice of a gas station attendant I talked to, to take the canyon. It was already snowing in Kamloops.
Well let me tell you the road between Kamloops and Savana was what nightmares are made of. I have driven on shitty snowy winter roads a lot, but this was something else entirely. The snow was coming down so hard that there were no tracks to follow on the highway. You had to guess where you were on the road. And to top that off every time a vehicle, especially a lot of semis went by, you were in a complete white out for a couple of minutes. But, that being bad, what made it nigh impossible was the fact that my windshield completely froze up, and the windshield wipers iced up and became useless. I COULD NOT SEE PROPERLY!!!! If I could have seen I would have been okay, if a little freaked, but I could not see and there was no way I could pull over.
The usual 45 minute trip took over two hours. Finally in Cache Creek I stopped at a gas station. I cleaned off my windshield and wipers. The snow that was falling was like snowballs compared to snow flakes. I decided to push on through though. As long as I could see I could drive, albeit at about thirty clicks. So off I went. There was no one else on the road at this point. So I slogged on and guess what. About 8 Kilometres south of Cache Creek near Ashcroft the snow disappeared and it was like summer. I goosed Tank up to 130 clicks, took her out of 4x4 and barrelled off. Thank goodness.
I spent the last few days with April and Myles. I love it there. Their place is beautiful and Christmassy. On the 23rd April made the most beautiful prime rib dinner and Myles's parents and Grandmother came to dinner. Honestly, I don't remember the last time I was at a company dinner and enjoyed it that much. The conversations were so interesting, the humour was flowing and we heard some interesting stories from Baka. She escaped the Nazis during the war from Croatia. The stories were amazing and I want to hear more. There wasn't enough time to hear them all. All in all it was a truly incredible evening.
Now I am at Aryn and Bradley's. And there is no one on this planet more into Christmas than Bradley. He has been so excited for the last month no less and now here we are. This place of theirs is totally Xmas....tree, candles, fire on the tv, music coming from hidden speakers, presents everywhere, lights strung on high....its beautiful and fun! He is like a kid.
Yesterday was Christmas eve. So we all gathered and had appies and laughs and fun and drinks and dog walks and games. Later in the evening Emily's James arrived. We had not met him before. And we were much impressed! He was a very tall good looking fellow and what impressed me the most was his whole self confident demeanour. And I have a sneaking suspicion he is a very kind person. All I know is we all want to get to know him better....if he is willing!
Today, Christmas day, was a lot of laying around and relaxing. Arnie wasn't feeling well so she napped on the couch. Bradley spent the morning hooking up his new speakers he got for Xmas. I made stuffing, almost my sole contribution to dinner. Bradley set the table, organized the serving dishes, cleaned and generally did a whack of a lot for dinner. Everybody arrived and as Aryn and Bradley made the dinner the rest of us played charades. Of course, a Christmas necessity! Later we watched a movie and now we are trying to go to sleep! Bradley is drunk and being very very funny!
As most of you know by now Monte had to be admitted to Lions Gate psychiatric ward. When April and I went down to visit him at a nearby hotel he was staying in, he was in total distress. We had to call 911 and they admitted him to the ward. He is much much better tonight, he phones occasionally. At this time we have no idea how long he will be in there and what the next step is. He hasn't seen a psychiatrist yet. We will have a better handle on it once that happens. He is quite content in there for the short haul. In many ways we are really lucky he is as amiable and kind as he is. And there isn't a drug problem or a drinking one. That would sure complicate things.
Now its one in the morning. Its finally quiet upstairs and I am sitting on the comfy couch in a pool of lappy light. I am feeling bad because I didn't call anyone today. So I must make some calls tomorrow, friends, grandchildren, rellies etc...
Sleepies are calling me.....TTYL

Well I am home. The trip home was absolutely beautiful. What a spectacular province we live in.
Monte suddenly packed his van Thursday afternoon and got the seven ferry to Peter in Victoria. I kept Wrangler, his dog, for a few days. I probably should have stopped him as he had a two hour appointment at the pschologists the next day and he had already missed his last two hour appointment. And he was in a pretty bad head state. But I didn't and he made it. He seems to be at his best when he is driving.
I had a lovely evening and dinner at April and Myles place that night. Its so homey and beautiful there. They had a lovely wood fire going and their tree is beautiful. And as usual supper was amazing.
I was in Hope by lunchtime the next day. There is a restaurant in Hope called Home. The food is diner good and better than fast food for sure. I decided to eat there. After lunch I drove the jeep around the back near the trees to let the dog out. Wrangler is a really good dog.
There was a man back there having a smoke. He looked at the dog and asked what his name was. So, of course, I say Wrangler. He stops, looks at the dog, looks at my Jeep (which of course has Wrangler written right across it) back at the dog. Jeez! I go "No no no!! I DID NOT name either of those things!!!! That dog isn't even mine!" I don't think he believed me.
Well kathy and I saw our duty and done it noble yesterday. We went to Costco and rang the Christmas bells for Sally Ann for a couple of hours. Its always fun out with her. She knows every other person in this city! She has told me lots of stories over the years and its kind of cool being able to put faces to the stories as all these people stop to talk to her! And that girl never ever complains. Actually she never complains about anything ever! I find myself still attempting to be as good and diligent and kind and patient as her. I shall never make it though!!!
It looks like Monte might be coming up. His place isn't quite ready in Port and Peter and Zoe can only house him for so long, so he can come here. It will be nice for Anton. I am gone til the end of the first week in January and he doesn't like being alone. Peter, our personal saint, has offered to help Monte get his new winter tires and drive up with him on Thursday. I will miss seeing them but I am happy for Monte. What a lovely offer.
Well I gotta jet. Lots to do!! TTYL

HASTY PACKING AND RANDOM CRAP
This post is going to be lame. I have spent the last week sitting in a motel room with Monte. Fortunately he and I always have a pretty good time together and I like motel rooms.
So since last Friday, Monte sleeps most of the day and is up all night. But when he gets up in the late afternoon, after a rough patch for about half an hour, he cheers right up and we get talking and laughing and have seriously good conversations. He is so smart. I take his dog out for walks and periodically go to Denny's for food. Food is food. Monte doesn't eat. Since last Friday he has eaten one sandwich. Thats it. Fortunately for him he has a great store of food on his body (fat) to feed from.
About six weeks ago when I was down, April and Myles and I went to the local Vietnamese pho restaurant. This place is busy busy busy!
I went there a couple of nights ago by myself for some pho. The little waitress came over and gave me a big smile and hello and said, "You have been here before! You had the beef stew!" Egads!!! How is it she remembered that with all the people that come through this place? I have a horrible suspicion I have entered that group of people that are odd enough to be memorable. I have a hair appointment Friday. Thank God!
When I decided to come down here I left the house in about five minutes. I grabbed my half packed suitcase, threw in pills and hair stuff, (no bath stuff, no deodorant, no tooth brush etc...). I threw in four shirts, two tights and a housecoat. No socks, no underwear (yes people, commando isn't as bad as you might think). I did remember my instant coffee though.
In the light of no underwear or socks I decided to find the nearest fat lady store. The one I used to go to either closed or moved.
And guess what? THERE ISN'T ONE!!!! I told everyone I was the fattest person living on the North Shore. Well this proves it! So commando it is. I could try Walmart but there are pictures of pineapples on all there fat lady stuff. So, no.
Tonight I am going to April's for supper. Between here and there I shall stop and pick up some bread to go with the spaghetti she is making. She is so busy. I don't know how she manages. I just don't want her to feel obliged to entertain me. I am coming back down on the 21st and can visit then.
Before I got down here Monte went out to get a coffee and he hit a speed bump the wrong way and he felt he had totally wratched his front right wheel. He said it wasn't driving right and it cracked his hub cap.
When I got down here I expected to see a ruined wheel with a flat tire. But it looked okay, not flat. Definitely a cracked hub cap and a bend on the rim but the tire wasn't flat. So taking my life in my hands, the next morning I hopped into the van and took it for a spin. It seems fine to me which totally simplified the visit down here. No tire to fix.
Monte has a two hour appointment with his psychologist tomorrow and from there he is heading to Victoria til after Xmas. His dear dear friend Peter has invited him to stay with him and his sister. I am so so hoping Monte will go to mental health and look into assisted living while he is in Victoria. At least for now. And I hope that Monte will be able to mind his p's and q's while at Peter's. It would be a terrible thing if he unwittingly caused even one moment of grief in that loving household. And thanks to info Kathy gave me and a little more research Monte and I did yesterday, I think he has all the phone numbers and info he needs. Now he just needs to follow up. Fingers crossed.
Well Monte has finally fallen asleep. Its already after twelve noon. He will sleep til tonight now. I sure hope he will be up and at it tomorrow morning. We have to check out of here by 11. Maybe he can plan to have lunch with his friend then go to his appointment. I have enjoyed this visit with him even though its been tough at times. He had two seizures but he recovered quickly. I don't see Monte much anymore. The last time was August. We talk lots on the phone but it isn't the same as seeing him. Gotta bounce! TTYL

ODE TO AMAZON
Armchair christmas shopping...you simply cannot beat it. This is the fourth year that my goal is to not step into even one store to buy a gift.
I don't shop in stores anymore. At least almost never. I am not talking groceries here...although thats coming. On a rare occasion I do go into Winners but only when I am out of outrageous smelling hand soap. They have an awesome selection.
I am going to digress here for a minute. I will get back to the armchair shopping in a moment.
I was in Costco the other day. I still buy toilet paper, paper towels, coffee etc... there. As I walked along that first entrance aisle where the irresistible 'deals' are I spied something lovely. It was a box with three hand pump soaps in it. They were quite large...which is good if you like the smell, bad if you have to use a crappy smelling one for the next five years. They were really beautifully decorated. So I read the flavours on them. They sounded so exotic and wonderful. Thyme and mint....orange and rosemary...a lavender and something or other. All acceptable smells to me. I bought them.
So I put one each in each of my three bathrooms. I used the one in the main powder room first. That was the thyme and mint. I don't know if you have ever been in a cow barn when they spread the lime all over the floor, but thats what it smells like. Seriously! No thyme. No mint. Actually it smells a little like hippies and medicine. Crap!!!
So I put the orange one upstairs in my bathroom. I ran upstairs (no I didn't, I huffed upstairs) and dashed into the bathroom and pumped the soap...expecting the orange minty goodness. And guess what? It smelled like a cowbarn right after you spread lime all over the floor. It smelled like hippies and medicine! What the hell? No orange and no mint, not even a hint. Bastards. I didn't bother with the third one. I am pretty sure there aint no lavender oder in it.
Any way back to the shopping. So I have spent the last week or so sitting in my red recliner going through pages and pages of amazon suggestions and I have pretty much got it all done. And I am so happy with my purchases. And now the fun starts! Every single day parcel after parcel arrives on my doorstep. And pretty soon there will be a giant whine post about all the xmas wrapping I have to do now that Spod is gone. TTYL

I'M GOING TO SMOKE POT
Just sayin'. But I am going to wait until its legal. I heard that that probably will be next July. I don't drink....much. I know that there are a few peeps out there that mistakenly think I do, but I don't...often. I feel smoking pot would be a lovely and smart alternative to drinking.
I smoked pot a few times in my distant past and what I remember is that it was a lot of fun. I remember a ridiculous amount of laughing, unhealthy snacking and fantastical ideas that didn't make much sense the next day. Oh, and Cat Stevens sounded magical.
So from what I have read, and I have done a fair amount of research, (so much so that I am getting a lot of marijuana offers of one sort or another in my email spam) I can look forward to some rather exciting things.
For example: I shall never again suffer any type of nausea. And for sure I will not have any significant pain...anywhere for any reason. And I can look forward to being laid back and chill with no anxiety, depression, mental illness or need for speed. I shant ever suffer from glaucoma or that baddy alzheimers. I won't have epileptic seizures (not that I do but this will make sure I don't). My brain will be protected AFTER a stroke...not sure why not before one. And of course the biggest one of all...it will cure any cancer my body might have the audacity to try starting.
So all in all it seems like a super idea to start smoking that stuff. In fact it seems that July is almost too far off! TTYL
PS: I am looking for a pot buddy. Any takers?

TOTAL LACK OF XMAS SPIRIT
I have decided not to put up a tree this year. I am going to be down with the kids in Vancouver so I really don't see the point of going through all the angst of putting it up. Its kind of sad but when I think about hauling that sucker upstairs from the shed, then trying to figure out which three parts go in what order, then getting the branches all even and settled, then getting the skirt at the bottom straight, then hanging the same old ornaments, then spend the rest of the season banging into it....no, too close to a shovel list item. I don't mind when the family is going to be here but they aren't this year. Anton feels the same way.
On the tenth of Dec. all the family, the Haights and Bootles and friends are going out to the same spot we were in a couple of years ago for a christmas tree cutting and hot dog roast and tobogganing. Its so much fun and such a Canadian thing to do. I am going to take Anton with me and show him a little Canadiana.
But alas, on the 16th its Sally Ann bell ringing time. Sigh. Not really my fave thing to do...especially for an association that doesn't support the LGBTQ community. But, they do help a lot of people and my fellow Kiwanians need us to help. At least I can spend a couple of hours with my sissy!
And tis the season of the pot luck. Ach jeez.....pot lucks. Why why why do people ALWAYS bring the same old crap. It seems it would be so easy to just go to the damn store and pick a non mainstream item and work a dish around it.
Ditch the potato salad (not like the one you are used to so you hate it). Ditch the mac salad, or pasta of some sort (which has a tendency to go runny and never ever has enough salt in it). And ditch those over sweet sticky meatballs in a crock pot. And for christ's sake leave the green salads at home. We are all sick of that predictable addition (except for my sisters green curly lettuce with the most delicious dressing ever). And then there is always the token badly done currie. I am guilty of that one. Oh, and I almost forgot...chicken wings. Not the delicious buffalo ones...people might not like spicey (too bad I say) but the boring sticky sweet ones that taste like meatballs.
Anton was just reading this over my shoulder and do you know what he just told me? That when he goes to a potluck he goes to the store and buys tortilla chips and hummus!!! Seriously? That is the ultimate pot luck insult!
And of course there is always the inevitable vegetable tray and dip. Now, I know I am biased on this one. Its not that I don't like veggies, but I am missing enough teeth that chewing that sort of item is hard. This is just my problem with those trays but its my blog so I get to put it on the bad pot luck list.
So I suggest that you should try to aim to be the hero of the next mandatory pot luck. Go to the store, go to the meat aisle (don't be cheap) and pick some different awesome meat (that doesn't turn into the inevitable pulled pork), or go to the produce department and pick up a jicama or a squash or lemon grass and ginger or something that isn't green salad or potato salad. I know!!! Buy a giant prime rib roast, roast it to rare, make some yorkshire puddings and an amazing gravy. Fill a pretty dish with real horseradish and bring that. Wow!! You will be the star of the pot luck!!!TTYL

PREACH
I have tried really hard not to get preachy on here. I know sometimes I have failed. Like my stand on extreme dog people, or extreme bear do gooders. My apologies. But here comes another one:
As I watch todays parenting, educating and general public expectations with regard to children, I am eternally grateful that I was able to raise my kids before:
-limo extreme equipped strollers
-ergo dynamic padded thousand dollar baby back carriers
-baby clothes that wick
-zero spanking
-belonging to ten different sports and lessons or some sort or other, no unscheduled down time
-no playing outside without adult supervision
-monster over attended birthday parties
-having a boyfriend or girlfriend at ten is 'cute'
-car seats until you are twelve or thirteen
-safe, padded, low height, no slides, no teeter totters playgrounds
-no strangers in bus stations or ferries allowed to -help you out by holding your baby for you
-moms or dads unable to look after their kids for too long by themselves
-moms or dads that can't shop and take their kids with them at the same time
-must take the kid to the dr if he/she sneezes, coughs, pukes, scrapes their knee, bends a finger
Well you get the picture. But I heard another one this morning that absolutely takes the cake.
I was watching the news and basically the girl scout association has recommended that we do not encourage our girls, not the boys, to not hug anyone they don't want to this holiday. Even if its a grandma or auntie or friend. Just because you haven't seen them for a long time or they have given you a gift, its not a reason to hug. Apparently this sets them up for future confusion on if affection is owed or not. This teaches them that to set physical boundaries and have them respected.
Are you kidding me? One...this is teaching them super rudeness. Two...this is teaching them to mistrust people outright. Three...this is seriously underestimating women's intelligence. This isn't forty years ago. If women get taken advantage of now, I believe there is a whole lot of other things at play (like freaking alcohol) and self esteem possibly. Obviously there are people out there that are out of bounds for casual hugging but the scouts are talking about everyone, including trusted loved family and friends.
Anyway, thats my preachy rant for the day. TTYL

DAY IN AND DAY OUT
You know its hard to do a post when basically nothing happens or you hardly ever leave your house.
Lets see, I went to Costco two days in a row. The first one was for groceries. Paper towels, pita bread, staples...you know. Anton came with me so he could start the process of getting new glasses. I brought home fries and gravy and a hot dog. Sigh. And half the groceries ended up on the floor behind my chair in the kitchen. I literally have no where to put them right now.
Then I went again the next day with Anton. He had an eye appointment and new glasses to buy and he of course does not have a Costco card. So whilst he did all that I sat in the food court, read my book and had a latte. Exciting eh?
Somewhere in here I obtained Emma. Due to newly painted doors in the Bootle house, she is stuck in their laundry room all day while Elayna is on twelve hour shifts. Thats a long long day. So she can be here.
But we have a problem. She simply will not pee or poo while she is on a leash. Anton has been letting her out the basement door after dark but during the day she has to be on a leash. I don't know what the heck her problem is. We go out there, and her leash is long, and she goes over there and lays down. That would be fine but then yesterday she went downstairs and pissed all over the basement.
So now she is confined to her dog bed. I won't let her out until I have seen her pee. I keep taking her outside and I think eventually she will do her business and then she will be free.
See how exciting my life is right now?
Next week I am actually doing a couple of things. On Tuesday I am babysitting Stirling for a morning and Amy is coming for coffee on Wed. Big woop!!!
Yesterday I got calls from three of my kids, every one of them in distress. April lost over half her london pics when Iphoto crashed. I can relate. I lost all my pics I took up to 2011 when I got a new computer and transferred them all over. Such an awful loss. Monte phoned in a complete total panic attack. He couldn't see or breath. I felt so helpless listening to him going totally crazy with fear. I finally hung up and phoned Pat. He tore upstairs with a couple of Ativan and that did the trick. Kevin called. He is sick and fatigued. He has been this way, plus other symptoms, since he was in Maui three years ago. The Dr. has done a million tests with no answers. So now he is on that hamster wheel searching for a diagnosis. My poor kids.
Now I am on the hunt for boots packed away downstairs in one of the unpacked boxes that are too heavy for me to move and a recipe for pineapple ginger chutney. Such is my Sunday.

HOME AGAIN HOME AGAIN JIGGITY JIG
Wow!! Its good to have decent wifi again! Although it was good at Aryn's but it was also very busy with no time to do much on my lappy (except play solitaire).
I had a great time at Aryn's. Its so homey and easy and full of furry companions. Molly is still pretty much the same. She sleeps a lot but gets pretty saucy when she is up.
One thing that happened had to do with Sadie (Granddog). Its a well known fact that besides being a very interesting attitudinal dog, she is a pig. You can't leave anything down that she can reach and eat.
So before heading out one evening I made sure my suitcase, which contained apples, was tightly closed. I didn't have any other food. But.....
When we got home that stinker had got my tied medicine bag off the coffee table, got it open, took out a plastic container (not a large one) got the lid off of it and ATE MY PILLS!!!! Holy cow!!! There was stomach acid pump inhibitors, metformin for blood sugars, little round ones that slow your heart down, and octagonal ones that .... hmmm not sure about that one. Also one for blood pressure which is also a diaretic (sp?). Ahhh fer jeez!!
I didn't think any thing would really happen but you never know. Well two nights later Aryn and I fell asleep on the couches as we watched a Murdock. I woke up and stumbled into the very dark bathroom and stepped smack into the biggest gushiest pile of the stinkiest possible doodoo! OMG!!!
I hopped out and hollered for Aryn. It took several hollers as the poor kid was sound sound asleep. She came running and immediately started loudly and most unladylikely gagging. And nothing makes me laugh faster than someone gagging. She started running around looking for cleaning things (it was on hard raw concrete...hard to clean and there was soooo much!!!) All the while gagging and gagging. And I was laughing and laughing. I told her I would clean it. After washing my foot off in the tub, I scooped the poop, and scooped and scooped and scrubbed and scrubbed and listened to Aryn gag and gag and the whole time Sadie stood there watching the gong show with the most baleful expression on her face. It was really funny.
Then the next day as we were heading towards the door with both dogs to walk them, Sadie stops, opens her mouth and promptly spews yellow bile into a big puddle. And then Molly immediately goes over and starts...well you don't need to know that part. I'll gag. Poor Sadie. I think the pills did a number on her after all.
I spent last night with Emily. I hadn't seen her apartment before and its a beauty! What a lovely place she has. Its so homey and roomy. We had a great visit.
I hit the road this morning at 8:30 and drove into the driveway at eleven. The roads were great, the sun was shining and there was zero traffic. I kept track, no car, not one, passed me all the way from Hope to Merritt! (that might have had something to do with the fact that I was averaging 140 klicks the whole way) TTYL

LONG TIME NO POSTI DI
Well, I would have posted but the wifi in this frigging hotel is pretty much non existent. Our hotel is beside a Denny's and we can get pretty good wifi there. We are going there later for dinner so I shall post there.
Its been a pretty awesome trip so far. I left Kamloops about 11 oclock Nov. 1st. I saw that there was going to be snow on the 2nd so I left a day early. Plus I needed to get down here for an appointment. Its a good thing I left when I did. The next day the Coqihalla was closed in two places.
I took five hours to get here. Normally it would be three and a half but I stopped in Merritt for coffee. Then I stopped at the old toll station and had a half hour snooze. Then I stopped at the flying J just past Hope for coffee. Mozie...thats what I did. I got here around four.
This is one beat up motel room. My bed is totally broken, the iron cross bar under the bed is lying freely on the floor. The bed is sagging badly and the top is on a different bar and the bottom is lying on the floor. But its really comfortable so I don't
care.
One of the reasons for the trip down was a rugby game. The New Zealand Blacks vs. The Canadians. The Blacks put on a pretty good show at the start of the game and also at half time. There were 30 thousand people there and we had absolutely the best time. My niece Jeni from Calgary arranged it all and twelve of us, all family, bought tickets from her and met at Gate E!! So as we munched hot dogs, pop corn, guzzled beer and wine, we hollered for Canada and the Blacks. After the game we all congregated at Boston Pizza. What a hoot the whole night was!!!
Right near the motel here is a Vietnamese Pho place. OMG!!! The food is unbelievable. I wish we had a place like this in Kamloops. We have gone there several times now and its been amazing each time...and full in there.
The funniest, awful thing happened just before I came down here. It was the end of the Kiwanis meeting. We were all kind of tying things up and moving around. I checked my phone and I saw April sent a couple of messages. So I opened the first one. It was a picture of her in her halloween makeup. People gathered around to see a pic of my daughter. It was so good!
Then I scrolled down to the next post. I was expecting another shot of her but.... it was a pic of a naked man, laying down with a 'ahem' fully blown up appendage, covered with a white hankie. It was wiggling and the heading was "Halloweenie" I will post a pic at the bottom.
Well Jeez!! At first there was a collective gasp from the gathered crowd, then, thank goodness, collective laughter. I was pretty embarrassed. This is an older pretty staid crowd. The gal next to me insisted I send it to her! She really thought it was funny. So I did. She looked at her phone and it didn't come through. Odd, I thought. So I sent it again...and again. Nope! Nothing. Finally I emailed it to her instead of texting it.
Then...horror of horrors I realized that Michelle, her name, is under a phone number in my contacts...not a name. The Michelle I was texting it to is a very prudish, kind, church going lady I barely know. She was to have been only a temporary contact and I had never deleted her. OMG!! I had to send numerous apologies. I am not sure if she got them or not!
This week passed pretty quickly. Monte had a couple of pretty awful days but seemed to bounce back at the end. His new psychologist is a miracle! He understands Monte so well and is helping him come to terms with his illness and possible prognosis. I think things will end well eventually. One thing he has been pretty clear about...Monte has been totally screwed over at every level by the medical community. Hes pretty sure there is a lawsuit there. I don't know...we will wait and see.
So now I am at Aryn's for a few days, a few busy days. Lots of plans. One of them is I am going to go to a medical clinic right near hear to see a doctor. I need to renew my pills and I want to check my blood pressure. Its so
much easier to see doctors here than in Kamloops. So every three months I think I will come down and stay here with Bradley and Aryn and walk over two blocks and see a doctor and get my pills renewed.
Sorry a

CHECKING IN
Not much to report. This last week has been a pretty quiet one. More unpacking. More can't find anything. More paying bills. More cooking.
Speaking of which....One morning I decided to make a giant vegetarian shepherd's pie. So I boiled up spuds, cut up onions, whacked up celery and veggies into tiny pieces, made a pot of mushroom gravy and assembled a massive huge pie. As I was doing this Kathy dropped in with Stirling. He was asleep in the stroller (she walked down). so she left him outside and came in for coffee. It so reminded me of the days gone past where we would leave our sleeping babies outside in their buggies!
When he did wake up Kathy went and got him and brought him in. He was so full of happy smiles! What a sweet child. After a bit Jo dropped in with Ainsley. Ainsley is such a hoot! She was decked out in a sparkly Ariel costume. I love listening to her talk. Its so interesting. She tends to leave the first consonant off her words. I could listen to her all day long! And she says the most interesting intelligent things for a three year old!
Much later or the next day I went into the living room to drink some coffee. And the spot on the couch where she had been sitting was covered in sparkles!!!
Anyway as they were leaving Kathy was kind of moaning about having to think up supper. They are leaving for India for a month tomorrow and of course she doesn't want any food left in her house. So I jokingly said she should take some shepherd's pie home...and then she said maybe they could come down for dinner. I felt kind of stupid...I should have asked them to come for dinner! Duh!!! I LOVE having them for dinner. They are always so appreciative and seem to like my food.
I was excited that it was my very first sit down dinner at the new table. So I set it all up and we had a lovely dinner! Pics below. And I have to go. Making a banana cake! TTYL

BIRTHDAY GOODNESS
What a wonderful 65th I had!!! Kathy called me in the morning of my birthday and asked if I would like to go to lunch, which of course I leaped to!! Then she asked where we should go.
One year ago she took me to that awesome garden/gift shop/cafe called the Pond for lunch. Then on her birthday in April I took her there for lunch. So we went there again this birthday. Its TRADITION!!!
After a lovely lunch we stopped at a couple of interesting stores. One of them was like a very badly organized Liquidation World. There was crap of all types...from food, to gum boots, to tires, to drinks, to.....well you would never guess what we found at the back of the store, mixed in between baby cribs, rubber boats and crap. Tucked under the back wall, mushed up with a load of junk was a bright shiny, metallic silver coffin. Yup! A coffin! I tried opening it but it wouldn't! Yikes!!
But we had a hoot looking around in there. Then we stopped at our fave Asian store and bought chilli stuff, ponzu sauce, weird rice stuff, tofu, vegetarian oyster sauce. Its always fun going there. Came home and watched Major Crimes, my fave show for the rest of the day.
The next day Kathy and I went to the Dirty Jersey to meet with the other Kiwanians to present cheques to deserving people, proceeds from our fund raising efforts. We also held the weekly meat draw. And as I mentioned last time I won twice...a turkey and a ham. This time I won again!!! Twice! And we had such a good time. I have a feeling Kathy would have rather been out hiking the gorgeous mountains on such a gorgeous day....but she had a good time too. She won once too!!!
Then today Anne picked me up at ten this morning. Unfortunately on my birthday my driver's license expired. So bless her she drove me over there and I renewed. And guess what? Instead of it being 75 bucks it was only 17 because now I am a senior!!!! Woot Woot!!!
She then took me to Service Canada. I couldn't successfully change my address on my account I obtained there back when Bill died. Without changing it you can do nothing about applying for CPP and OAP. But...they needed a piece of ID with my address. I don't have one. So I go back tomorrow with my new license. Actually I put this wrong. We went down to Service Canada first. I hadn't renewed my license yet or I could have used it.
So all in all its been a good few days I would say!!! The next issue I must deal with is Alice, the housekeeper. I can't afford her anymore. What I pay her monthly is exactly what I now have to pay in strata fees. So if she is willing to cut the visits here in half I would love to have her still come. I feel bad...she is such an amazing housekeeper. Well gotta bounce...its late and I am tired and my horse is tired! TTYL

BUSY BUSY
It always amazes me how much time goes by between posts!
I have had four stellar memorable meals and evenings since the last post.
I met with Emily and Dorothy the first night after Aryn got back. We went down to a place near here called Rogue. OMG!! We ordered three starters and three meals and two desserts and shared them all. So delicious, calamari, tacos, dips, charcuterie board, fish and chips, tuna stacks.
And we had amazing conversation. I love spending time with them. Emily had undertaker stories and Dorothy had moving to Montreal stories. Loved it.
Then the next night A&B took me to the most amazing restaurant. Its called Chicha. It is a Peruvian, true Peruvian (not fusion) restaurant. I can't even begin to describe the menu or the food we had that night. It was all served tapas style which makes for an even more friendly and intimate evening. Then when we walked back we walked along a few blocks of restored Victorian houses, with twinkle lights in their front gardens and on the ornate gates. Magical!
Then the next night we had a full on turkey dinner. We had missed thanksgiving and so did two friends of theirs that attended as well. So all day Arnie and I made this delicious turkey dinner. And Aryn is just so insanely busy right now but she managed to throw in a turkey dinner! And let me tell you, she is one hell of a cook. Her food is well thought out, gourmet, seasoned beautifully...absolutely divine. What a delightful delicious evening!
Then last night...oh my god!!! She made turkey pot pie. It was so good! It smelled good while she was making it, and then baking it then served it. Mmmmmmm....I could eat that all day long!
On Sunday I went to North Van and had a special and wonderful time with Clare and Tish. We had to go to a different place as they are renovating our usual watering hole. They are such special people and unfortunately it was really loud in the new place. I am meeting with them in mid November and we must find a quieter venue. I have one in mind right near there. I just love those two people and I want to hear them!!!
From there I headed over to Cookies place. What a wonderful time. Monte was having a really distressful evening, which meant I was on the phone a lot. They were so understanding and kind about it. Her mom was there and we had such a good visit. Pam came over the next evening and the three of us had a good old visit. Its so nice to hang with two ladies the same age, from the same high school, from the same town. Awesome!!!
I left this morning for home. Mamma Sidhu came with me as far as her home in Merritt. We had THE BEST trip ever. She is such a hoot!! For 87 we could all take a lesson from her!!! We stopped at the Flying J truck stop. I bought corn dogs and onion rings to share. She dug right in and had onion rings and catsup! We had THE BEST time!!! More tomorrow! TTYL
I have had four stellar memorable meals and evenings since the last post.

RANDOM HAPPENINGS
I woke up in the middle of the night and happened to glance at a paper bag beside my couch where I am sleeping. I knew what was in that bag. Ridiculously overpriced apples from Whole Foods. Suddenly I was craving an apple like crazy!
So I pulled one out, a golden aurora, and proceeded to clean it off. Still sitting in my bed, I took a huge bite...and then remembered I didn't have my teeth in. So I have two teeth on the top on each side way at the back. I have one tooth on each side way at the back on the bottom. And four front teeth on the bottom. Thats it. I didn't want to get up. So I ate that sucker with basically hardly any teeth. It was hard and took forever but I finally did it! This morning my gums are sore.
A couple of nights ago, around three in the morning I was rudely awakened by shouting, running feet and what I swear was gun shots. Suddenly there were screeching tires and sirens and lights flashing. I am up on the third floor.
I dashed out onto their deck here and peeped over the side, carefully, I was leery of stray bullets at this point. Things calmed down a little and I could see a man laying out just below...looking dead. Some of the cops kept running down the alley and out of sight. After a few minutes an ambulance arrived and they rushed over to the layed out dude. They worked on him for a long time and then finally put him on a stretcher and into the ambulance...not covered so not dead. Then the cops hopped into their vehicles and took off. Voila! Done. Back to bed.
Whole Foods. What can I say? I am aware that they have been bought by someone that promises to make it more usable. I get it that some of their stuff is going to be a little more pricey because it isn't main stream. But some things just don't make sense to me, other than its just a cheesy price grab.
For example: their roast chicken. Their roast chicken is fourteen bucks. FOURTEEN!!! Costco's, which are free range healthy chickens, are 8 bucks. Safeway's are 8, Superstore's are 8. Whole Foods are almost double!
They have zero pop...no coke, no pepsi, no ginger ale etc... But they have aisles of sugar loaded juice and other trendy drinks...drinks that are even less healthy than soda pop.
They have aisles of hot cooked food and different size boxes you fill. They charge by the ounce. I went along and had a good look. Its all variations of vegetable and healthy versions of normal food. The stuffing was bread of course, but also fruit and nuts! Bleh!!! They must have had five different versions of Brussels's sprouts. And what the hell is with chick peas? And sweet potatoes instead of real ones. Oh, and five or six variations of squash. It was the oddest most unappealing line up of food choices I have ever seen.
But...Whole Foods saving grace is in one item they sell. And that is butter. Its a butter made in Quebec. On a whim I bought it. 5.69 for a half pound (if that). I brought it home along with a small baguette.
The moment I opened that jar I could tell by the smell that finally I found a butter equal to the butter in France. It was divine!!!! I bought one for each of the girls and tomorrow I am going back to buy a few to take home with me. I am going to take a picture of the little pot it comes in. Totally reusable and cute.
Yesterday I headed over to April's. Myles had to work so she and headed out to find dinner somewhere. That somewhere ended up being the Cheshire Cheese...all food english, down at the Quay. Their menu has not changed in over thirty years. Bill and I used to go their on occasion when our office was at the Quay.
They serve Poughman's Lunch, Fisherman's Pie (my fave), steak and kidney pie, bangers and mash, fish and chips, etc.....
Well I got my fave, fish pie but April ordered something called Toad in a Hole. Its a sausage sticking out of yorkshire pudding covered in gravy. There is no way can I decently describe the dish that arrived, not without being graphically rude. Jeez we had a hard time not looking shocked then not laughing rudely. So I shall post a pic at the bottom! The meal was delicious and I had such a good time! I always do with her. TTYL

ALL I WANT FOR XMAS.....
As my facebook friends already know, a visible almost front tooth fell off of my bridge...and I ate it!! I was eating left over pho when I accidentally bit into the piece of lime in the soup. I think thats what knocked it off and even though I spit out the lime, the tooth clearly didn't go out with it. Now I have, yet again, a gap. And as one of my fave FB friends labelled me, Hillbilly Helen, so suitable. sigh
Its funny, just one of the reasons I gave Molly to Aryn (and this will sound silly but...) was because of the way she would steadfastly sit and stare at me for hours on end. Drove me crazy. Well she can't hold a candle to Fred (Aryn's cat). That cat gets about ten inches (for you metric folks thats REALLY CLOSE) from my face then stares. And stares and stares. Not moving. Not meowing. Just staring. And staring. And staring. sigh He really is quite the cat. I put some stuff at the bottom of this that explains a lot.
Well I managed to get Tank out of the basement here. I must admit I was a tad nervous. But it all went well!
I headed over to April's. We ordered greek food and Jess and baby Mabel came over. We had a lovely time! Mabel is totally adorable. And she is one chunky little lady! Roly poly arms and legs and roundy cheeks...she is so huggable. Not that I got to. She took one look at me and started to cry! All babies do that with me. It takes a while for them to warm up.
April gave me my birthday present. It is a beautiful rose gold pandora ring. I had admired it in a store we were in the other day and she got it for me! I am so spoiled! I absolutely love it and don't want to take it off. I will post a pic below.
Well I am going to cut this short. My left hand pinky finger and the one next to it are numb. This problem started back in 2003 and comes and goes. Not sure why...probably something to do with my neck. Its really annoying and I can't feel with those fingers so typing is hard to do. TTYL

INTERESTING EATS, BUT I NEED MY BOLOGNA
It's been a real food adventure around here. I see that most of it is either Asian or Greek. I have been to the Pho place a couple of times now. Their pho is phonomenal. I purposely spelled that wrong as a joke. Haha! Sorry.
Thank god they serve two sizes. Finally a place that sells smaller bowls than the usual ones you get. The usual ones are so flipping big and I find it kind of shocking that those tiny asian peeps can just chow the whole thing down like they do. I get half way through, the small one at that, and get stuck. I always seem to be carrying a little bag home with me these days, either full of soup I can't finish or dog poo. One or the other.
Speaking of dog poo, such an adventure it is to pee and poo your dog here in the city. At home I have always been able to throw them out the door and a few minutes later let them back in. Then I would force either Bill or Monte out there once a week to pick the little (or not so little with some of our dogs) nuggets.
I have walked through that front door of this building more times in the last few days than I have walked through my own front door at home since I moved. And I am familiar with every single patch of grass or dirt between here and the corner down at the end of the block.
I am also becoming familiar with every one of the 150 dogs that live on this block and I am getting onto first name basis with the homeless fellows that live within this same radius. And if I am watching a cop show I can't tell if the sirens are on the show or outside. I have been tricked a few times now. Such a different life this is. I am even getting to know the people that live in this building. Everyone is so friendly and half of them know I am Aryn's mom. Its kind of cool.
So Cardero's. The kids picked me up and down to the waterfront we went. I knew I had been there before...only it was called the Boathouse back then. Bill had taken me there on occasion. When we got seated, a very tall lovely waiter brought us a glass of champagne..delicious champagne! What a lovely surprise and fantastic way to start my birthday dinner.
The whole evening was magical. The location, the amazing food, but most of all the company. They are such an awesome fun couple to spend time with. We laughed and visited and ate and criticized, and gossiped until we were so full we could hardly move. And I had oysters! Buttermilk fried oysters! OMG!!! Unbelievably delicious!
I stuck pretty close to home here since that evening. I have a couple of pho runs, falafel lunch, bank depositing, crap runs for Molly, garbage removal (that one was a trip in itself I tell you...living in a loft in a building is crazy).
I have actually been enjoying Molly, now that she isn't mine! She is so funny. She is pretty scrappy looking and is really very blind and deaf. But boy she still has a lot of spunk in her. Just a few minutes ago I was typing away here, completely absorbed by what I am writing, when her big squeaky toy landed right on my lappy, startling the hell out of me. She had been over on the other side of the room, shaking the shit out of the toy and clearly she let it go in mid shake. Crazy little mutt!!! Gotta bounce...TTYL
